About Us
The Old Crocs was formed over a few ales (what club wasn’t) in 1999, by a few guys wanting to extend the fun of playing rugby, but at a less rigorous level (with no training either), not really wanting to be golden oldies but alas as the years have gone by, it is now time to be called Veterans. We are a member of Veterans Rugby Queensland Association.
Rather than losing our skills from “the game they play in heaven” forever, we have used that experience in the management and development of rugby on all levels, especially junior level, as well as promoting the game to over 35’s to become actively involved.
Since our formation, we have toured each year (with our families) to various places in Australia, including Perth, Gold and Sunshine Coasts, Townsville, Bowen, Darwin, and Camden in NSW, looking for games with like-minded clubs, promoting the game, our tournament and Tropical North Queensland. In 2010 we toured as a team to Vietnam and in 2008 it was Phuket, Thailand. We have also hosted clubs and teams from other places including the supporters teams travelling with the British Lions, a couple of NZ teams and a team from the USA.
Our club has earned a reputation within the Cairns rugby community as hard working and also willing to lend a hand. Our fundraising activities help support our tours and each year we donate funds and equipment to the Junior and Cairns Representative teams, as part of our Mission Statement to support and encourage the development of rugby at all levels. In 2009-2010 we gave away in excess of $15,000 to the rugby community.
We have become active in the charity movement as well, this year hosting our inaugural Gold Legends Invitational Charity Match in July 2010.
Mostly though, we enjoy the social side of our club's activities and tours. Lots of planning goes into our activities to make sure everyone involved has a good time on and off the paddock.
